DDR Dance Mat Shopping Tips and Advice
Choosing the right DDR dance mat for you is important. You want to not only enjoy the game, but increase your skill level as well. For me, these two things go hand in hand. If I’m not somewhat successful at a video game from the start, I won’t go back to playing it because nothing is more frustrating than having to play the same level over and over again. If I get to this point, I might as well just sell the game on eBay or it will collect dust in the closet. If you are just starting out, I do not recommend dropping hundreds of dollars on a DDR dance mat just to find out you hate playing. Go ahead and use the cheap plastic mat that comes with the game, you can always upgrade at a later date.
As I said earlier, the plastic DDR dance mats are cheap, but you don’t want to drop your hard earned money on something you won’t use. Take your game home and try things out first. If you really like playing your dance game, then start looking into some better options. The cheap plastic mats can be hard on your feet and may slide around while you are playing which may cause you to become frustrated when you can’t pass the level you’ve been trying to beat for 3 days. If you are at this point, then upgrading your DDR mat is definitely in your future.
Before you buy a DDR dance mat, the main thing you need to know is how often you plan to use your pad. Just make a mental note about how often you plan to use your dance mat or how often you have already used the plastic mat that came with your game. If you are going to use it daily, you will definitely want to splurge and move towards the metal mats. These mats last longer and don’t move around as much.
Don’t be afraid to buy more than one DDR dance mat at a time. You never know when another family member may want to join in the fun when they see how much weight you are losing while having fun too. With an extra mat laying around, you can have competitions against others and you will always have a spare just in case you wear your first mat out.
It’s important to make sure the dance mat model you are looking at is designed for your system. There is nothing more disappointing than getting home with your new toy and then realizing that your purchase will not work with what you already own. Returning video game items is difficult sometimes, so doing the research up front is important. If you are unsure about the compatibility, be sure to read the side of the box at the store or ask a store clerk. When buying online, the retailer should state the systems for which a mat is compatible. If they don’t state it in the description, email the online retailer or move on to the next item or store. You don’t want to hassle around with returning an online purchase when the mistake could have been avoided.
Storage of your DDR dance mat is also important. Make sure it is stored at room temperature in a dry environment. This will keep the internal components from damage due to over exposure to extreme temperatures. Once you have your mat out of the box, avoid folding it back up. Folding your mat could cause the arrows to shift which would keep you from hitting the notes you have hit in the past. If you do choose to fold your mat, be aware of this next time you get it out to play and shift the arrows back into place before using it again. You will avoid a lot of frustrations and cursing at the TV (at least if you are like me).
If you are just starting out in the Dance Dance Revolution (and other similar games) world, I hope this article about the DDR dance mat is of some help to you. If you are ready to buy, I have listed some metal mats that are available on eBay to help you get started shopping.

In the past I have talked about how DDR is so great for your health because it gets you up and off the couch and moving. However, I do understand that if you do not own a video game system then getting involved with dance dance revolutions can be a little cost prohibitive, but do not worry, there is hope for you as well.
TV DDR pads are games that hook up directly to your TV without any video game system needed. Not only do they allow you a low priced entry into the world of dancing games, but they are also great for kids; you don’t have to worry about them ruining an expensive piece of equipment.
When you are purchasing a Plug N Play DDR game, make sure that you don’t get your expectations too high. Typically, these games don’t have the high graphics quality and options that are available with games for the standard gaming systems. If this is alright with you, then you will not be disappointed when you get your purchase home and unpacked. Also, some of the TV DDR games do not have lyrics either which can become very irritating to some people as well.
If you are thinking about getting into the dance dance revolution games, but do not want to put out a lot of money, then a TV DDR pad may be right for you to test the waters with. Money is tight with everyone these days and I would rather test the waters with a $25 purchase which may sit around and collect dust than a $300 paper weight which may sit around and collect dust.
I have listed some TV DDR Pads from eBay below if you are interested in trying one out. Feel free to come back and review it in the comments (don’t worry if it’s good or bad).

Read MoreSoft Dance Revolution Pads – You Get What You Pay For

The soft Dance Revolution Pads are the controllers that typically come with a DDR game right out of the box. They are covered in slippery plastic and look like the mat pictured to the left here.
If you are a casual player, the soft pack in pad is going to be right for your use, but if you wear your first pad out, I would highly recommend investing in a better hard mat made for your system.
To make your dance revolution pad last longer and avoid slippage while on carpeting, I would recommend attaching your mat to a piece of plywood or hard metal. Worst case scenario, use your dance pad with a piece of cardboard underneath it to help keep your pad from slipping.
You may be tempted to fold up your pad for storage, but this is not recommended. When the pad is folded the arrows will move around and out of place. When you unfold the mat you will then have to readjust the arrows to get them back in place before using the mat. Instead, find a place where you can hang your mat in a closet or on a wall out of the way. This way you are not losing precious gaming time messing around with your mat before playing DDR.
Another problem that occurs with soft Dance Revolution pads is they tend to miss some of your steps which could cause you to become frustrated. This is an extremely common problem when you are playing on carpet or a soft surface. Using my board suggestion above could help with some of these problems, but once again, if you are planning on becoming a hardcore DDR player, invest in a more durable mat.
Soft Dance Revolution pads may seem like a good idea at the time, but as you can see you may be better off investing in a hard DDR mat to keep your sanity. A hard mat may cost more up front, but in the long run you will save yourself money because you won’t be replacing a cheap mat every other month. Of course, if you are unsure as to whether you are going to like DDR, then definitely go with the soft mat to start.
I have listed some soft dance revolution pads below to get you started on your Dance Dance Revolutions game. I really hope you enjoy as much as I do. At that point you can upgrade to a metal mat.

Read MoreDDR Konamix for Sony Playstation

Dance Dance Revolution Konamix, or otherwise known as DDR Konamix, is the 3rd version of Dance Dance Revolution to be released for the Playstation in the US. It is named Konamix because all of the songs are Konami originals. Most of the songs on this game are from the second, third, fourth and fifth versions of the Japanese DDR games; the rest of them are club mixes of other original DDR songs with a few songs original to the North American game. There are a total of 52 songs available, but only 32 are ready to play from the start. The other 20 songs must be unlocked through game play.
Most US releases of a games have a Japanese equivalent, and DDR Konamix is no exception, its sister game is Dance Dance Revolution 4th mix. For the most part, the only change between the release in Japan and North America are a few songs that are exclusive for the US. Features not available in previous games include the use of corner buttons, tempo changes, and the most obvious being the music.
When DDR Konamix was originally released, it did not receive a lot of favorable reviews because there were not a lot of changes made to the series from DDR Disney Mix to this one. While the songs were all original to Konami, not having songs that are popular in the mainstream hurt the game in the reviews as well. However, if you are a plain old Dance Dance Revolution fan and not a video game critic then you should not have a problem liking this game. You see, gamers are always looking for a lot of new and innovative things in their games while the mainstream players may be happy with what they are familiar with. The good news is, if you are new to the series, you won’t know the difference.
I know I may have thrown you for a loop in that previous paragraph, because I am obviously writing about this game 9 years after it has been released. The good thing with playing an older game is it is easier to find tips and tricks around the web for passing a difficult level, the other thing is you can often get older games at a steal. Who knows, there may even be an old Playstation system laying around the house for you to get started with. If not, then you can pick one up for a steal at a rummage sale around town or even on eBay. Don’t worry if you cannot find a system to play this version of DDR, there are plenty more games in this series that you can pick up for current generation systems. Granted the entry cost will be more, but you can count on more new releases and features to be released on future games.
The list of songs available on Dance Dance Revolution Konamix are found below and I have noted the ones that need to be unlocked before you can play them. The songs are listed in alphabetical order.

Read MoreDance Dance Mario Mix Revolution For Nintendo Gamecube
The Dance Dance Mario Mix Revolution game is one of the few of its type for the Game Cube. The mat for this game is more responsive than the Mad Catz’s mat (previously the only version available for the Cube).
The Dance Dance Mario Mix Revolution mat is not only more responsive, but it is filled with vertical grooves which feel good on bare feet. It also has a sticky backing on the bottom to help keep the mat from slipping around. There is a silhouette of a break-dancing Mario in the center of this mat; making it a cool collectible for Mario lovers.
The game itself is based on the Dance Dance Revolution games that have become so popular. There are a couple major differences however. The Mario game still requires you to get up and hop around on the mat to play the game, and it does have music that you play to. That’s about it for likeness though.
The DDR games require some fast footwork for some of their songs, and you get graded on performance. You won’t see that in the Mario game. There are no grades, and even on the hardest level the steps aren’t too fast. You will hear the music on Mario, but on the screen you will see the awesome graphics for the storyline of Mario. In the Mario you are actually playing the game instead of just dancing to the arrows flashing on the screen in Dance Dance Revolution.
Because of the slower pace, and the storyline, this game would be perfect for some of the younger players. They will still get the exercise, but they will really enjoy the game. There are multiple levels to conquer, and bad guys to stomp on, as well as mushrooms to chase. There isn’t any grading to discourage the younger players either on the Dance Dance Mario Mix Revolution game.
Because of the easy levels, and the easy footwork involved in this game it wouldn’t be suitable for hard core Dance Dance Revolution fans. They could easily get bored with the simple steps, but then again they might enjoy the storyline too. If they happen to be a Mario fan then that could very well be true. Basically, this game is well suited for younger kids that don’t want to fail in the DDR games, but want to play by using the mats like the older kids do.
If you are really interested in finding this rare game, you are going to have to work at it. I have found that eBay and Amazon are the easiest places to find it. If you click on the picture above, you will be taken to the Amazon listing and below I have listed some of the Mario Mix games available on eBay.

Read MoreWhy I love games like Dance Dance Revolution
Even though this site is called Dance Dance Revolutions, we will be covering anything and everything about dance and exercise games. The number one reason people stop exercising at home is because they get bored with their workouts, but I have always found that if I am trying to beat someone, a score, or a goal then I am more likely to keep going back to that activity. If that activity, like dancing games, gets me a workout then it’s even better.
Right now, there are so many dancing games available that it is almost impossible to get bored. While walking on a treadmill is boring, concentrating on something while getting a workout is great. I feel like I’m working out my brain as well as my body.
I also love to play DDR with my husband, it’s something I’m better than him at so I always win
We are very competitive and this really bothers him. Without him knowing, I do this on purpose so he’ll practice and burn some extra calories, because we both can use it.
As time goes on, when you visit this site again, you will begin to see my love of dance dance revolutions games shine through in my posts. I hope you’ll try it out and find out why I love playing these games so much.
Thank you for stopping by and welcome.

Read MoreZumba WII Review – My Initial Thoughts
Two weeks after receiving Zumba on WII game in the mail I finally ripped off the cellophane wrap and played it for the first time. This review are my initial thoughts on the game, more will come later after I have had a week or more to get acquainted with it and move up a couple of levels.

First of all, I do have to say that even though I am very critical of the game in this review, I still do recommend it. I have never tried the DVD’s, but I always have a difficult time with exercise videos because I can never get a sense if I’m doing something correctly. Even with the poor movement sensors for this game, it still kept me motivated enough to keep on pushing through.
I know I didn’t purchase this game for the navigation system, but I think it was horrible. I kept getting bumped back to a previous screen with the smallest flick of a button. This became very irritating as I was going through the tutorials because I had a difficult time figuring out where I was in the navigation system. I have to admit that I was being lazy and not pulling my WIImote out of the belt between the tutorials because it became a pain in the rear to pull it out every time I finished a 30 second tutorial.
Speaking of tutorials, they were not good at all. Having never been to a Zumba class in my life or trying the DVD’s I think they just went way too fast for my tastes. Once the game sensed that you were achieving the moves it went faster without marking through what was coming next. I think this is necessary because the extremely basic part of the move that you start off with is not the final step that you end up doing. This is a problem because of the poor accuracy when it comes to the game being able to detect what you are actually doing. If you just step away to get a drink of water, the game could think you have mastered the beginning step and move on without you, causing you to have to take the tutorial all over again.
I was also a little disappointed that this game does not have a way of generalizing how many calories you have burned. I realize everyone is different, but if you could enter your height and weight, I’m sure they could come up with a way of getting in the general vicinity of your calorie burn.
WII Zumba Motion Sensor
- In my eyes, it is not accurate. You could probably walk in place the entire time and receive a perfect score. Since I have no prior experience with Zumba, I can reassure you that it shouldn’t happen that way. In fact, after playing my first round, I received a score of 384 which put me at the Zumba Instructor level. I can reassure you, that’s not the case.
- The WIImote is placed in a belt that you wear around your waist to sense your hips moving, but there is no way the game can tell if you are moving your arms correctly.
Overall Zumba WII Fun Factor
While this game does have its faults, which I hope will be fixed in future versions, I did think this game was fun. So what if the controls aren’t perfect? So what if the score is jacked up because of the controller? It got my butt off the couch and got me moving and that’s what exergaming is all about. I also worked up a pretty good sweat while I was doing it too, which is a great thing.
I’ll post more in the upcoming weeks about the game and if it is keeping me motivated enough to keep using it, that’s the biggest battle many of us have when it comes to working out, sticking to it. Meanwhile, if you have played Zumba WII, feel free to post your comments below, I’m sure other readers would be very happy to hear from you.

Read MoreDance Dance Revolution Xbox Pad
The era of dancing is here with the DDR game and along with that is the Dance Dance Revolution Xbox pad. Many people, especially parents, are discovering that this game is a great way of getting their teens to exercise. The DDR game requires you to dance on a special mat to hit the arrows that flash on your screen at the appropriate times. The more arrows you hit on time the better you score, and yes the game grades you. Don’t be afraid of failing the first couple times you play, and master the easier dance routines before you move on to some of the harder ones. Since the game includes some popular songs and dancing routines it is a smash with some of the younger crowd.
The DDR game is available for the Xbox and the Dance Dance Revolution Xbox pad comes in a couple different models. You can get these mats in metal and in foam. The metal pads are set up to be pretty durable and are great for tournaments and competitions. They can also be used for private use though, and are a good idea if you have someone who likes to play the game constantly. These mats can be used on carpet of hardwoods floors as well. This means that you can set it up practically anywhere you want and the pad will work for you.
The foam mats are also pretty durable and have the added benefit of foam. The high density foam means that these types of mats aren’t quite as stressful on your feet. This is great when you like to play this game for hours at a time. Some of these mats also have a non-slip surface on the bottom so that they won’t slid around on the floor while you’re playing.
If you find that you like this game, or your kids are enjoying the exercise of playing the game, these newer mats are quite a bit more responsive. This means that you are more likely to score high on the dance routines that you can do well. It also means that you can’t hit the buttons at the wrong time or your score will drop. The high responsive buttons means that you have to be at the top of your game to get to the top of the game. Remember not to be afraid to fail. Everyone has to start somewhere. Just master the steps as you go along and you’ll get there. Most of all have fun with the game and the Dance Dance Revolution Xbox pad.
