The Dance Dance Mario Mix Revolution game is one of the few of its type for the Game Cube. The mat for this game is more responsive than the Mad Catz’s mat (previously the only version available for the Cube).

The Dance Dance Mario Mix Revolution mat is not only more responsive, but it is filled with vertical grooves which feel good on bare feet. It also has a sticky backing on the bottom to help keep the mat from slipping around. There is a silhouette of a break-dancing Mario in the center of this mat; making it a cool collectible for Mario lovers.

The game itself is based on the Dance Dance Revolution games that have become so popular. There are a couple major differences however. The Mario game still requires you to get up and hop around on the mat to play the game, and it does have music that you play to. That’s about it for likeness though.

The DDR games require some fast footwork for some of their songs, and you get graded on performance. You won’t see that in the Mario game. There are no grades, and even on the hardest level the steps aren’t too fast. You will hear the music on Mario, but on the screen you will see the awesome graphics for the storyline of Mario. In the Mario you are actually playing the game instead of just dancing to the arrows flashing on the screen in Dance Dance Revolution.

Because of the slower pace, and the storyline, this game would be perfect for some of the younger players. They will still get the exercise, but they will really enjoy the game. There are multiple levels to conquer, and bad guys to stomp on, as well as mushrooms to chase. There isn’t any grading to discourage the younger players either on the Dance Dance Mario Mix Revolution game.

Because of the easy levels, and the easy footwork involved in this game it wouldn’t be suitable for hard core Dance Dance Revolution fans. They could easily get bored with the simple steps, but then again they might enjoy the storyline too. If they happen to be a Mario fan then that could very well be true. Basically, this game is well suited for younger kids that don’t want to fail in the DDR games, but want to play by using the mats like the older kids do.

If you are really interested in finding this rare game, you are going to have to work at it. I have found that eBay and Amazon are the easiest places to find it. Right now, there are so many dancing games available that it is almost impossible to get bored. While walking on a treadmill is boring, concentrating on something while getting a workout is great. I feel like I’m working out my brain as well as my body.

I also love to play DDR with my husband, it’s something I’m better than him at so I always win We are very competitive and this really bothers him. Without him knowing, I do this on purpose so he’ll practice and burn some extra calories, because we both can use it.

First of all, I do have to say that even though I am very critical of the game in this review, I still do recommend it. I have never tried the DVD’s, but I always have a difficult time with exercise videos because I can never get a sense if I’m doing something correctly. Even with the poor movement sensors for this game, it still kept me motivated enough to keep on pushing through.

I know I didn’t purchase this game for the navigation system, but I think it was horrible. I kept getting bumped back to a previous screen with the smallest flick of a button. This became very irritating as I was going through the tutorials because I had a difficult time figuring out where I was in the navigation system. I have to admit that I was being lazy and not pulling my WIImote out of the belt between the tutorials because it became a pain in the rear to pull it out every time I finished a 30 second tutorial.

Speaking of tutorials, they were not good at all. Having never been to a Zumba class in my life or trying the DVD’s I think they just went way too fast for my tastes. Once the game sensed that you were achieving the moves it went faster without marking through what was coming next. I think this is necessary because the extremely basic part of the move that you start off with is not the final step that you end up doing. This is a problem because of the poor accuracy when it comes to the game being able to detect what you are actually doing. If you just step away to get a drink of water, the game could think  you have mastered the beginning step and move on without you, causing you to have to take the tutorial all over again.

I was also a little disappointed that this game does not have a way of generalizing how many calories you have burned. I realize everyone is different, but if you could enter your height and weight, I’m sure they could come up with a way of getting in the general vicinity of your calorie burn.

WII Zumba Motion Sensor

• In my eyes, it is not accurate. You could probably walk in place the entire time and receive a perfect score.  Since I have no prior experience with Zumba, I can reassure you that it shouldn’t happen that way. In fact, after playing my first round, I received a score of 384 which put me at the Zumba Instructor level. I can reassure you, that’s not the case.
• The WIImote is placed in a belt that you wear around your waist to sense your hips moving, but there is no way the game can tell if you are moving your arms correctly.

Overall Zumba WII Fun Factor

While this game does have its faults, which I hope will be fixed in future versions, I did think this game was fun. So what if the controls aren’t perfect? So what if the score is jacked up because of the controller? It got my butt off the couch and got me moving and that’s what exergaming is all about. I also worked up a pretty good sweat while I was doing it too, which is a great thing.

I’ll post more in the upcoming weeks about the game and if it is keeping me motivated enough to keep using it, that’s the biggest battle many of us have when it comes to working out, sticking to it. The DDR game is available for the Xbox and the Dance Dance Revolution Xbox pad comes in a couple different models. You can get these mats in metal and in foam. The metal pads are set up to be pretty durable and are great for tournaments and competitions. They can also be used for private use though, and are a good idea if you have someone who likes to play the game constantly. These mats can be used on carpet of hardwoods floors as well. This means that you can set it up practically anywhere you want and the pad will work for you.

The foam mats are also pretty durable and have the added benefit of foam. The high density foam means that these types of mats aren’t quite as stressful on your feet. This is great when you like to play this game for hours at a time. Some of these mats also have a non-slip surface on the bottom so that they won’t slid around on the floor while you’re playing.

If you find that you like this game, or your kids are enjoying the exercise of playing the game, these newer mats are quite a bit more responsive. This means that you are more likely to score high on the dance routines that you can do well. It also means that you can’t hit the buttons at the wrong time or your score will drop. The high responsive buttons means that you have to be at the top of your game to get to the top of the game. Remember not to be afraid to fail. Everyone has to start somewhere. Just master the steps as you go along and you’ll get there. Most of all have fun with the game and the Dance Dance Revolution Xbox pad.

Zumba for WII

I know it has been a while since I have posted anything original on this blog, I figured out it’s time to get back to work. Working out that is. While I have been riding my exercise bike religiously while working on the computer, sometimes I need just a little bit more to stay motivated. Even though this blog is titled Dance Dance Revolutions, I did state when I originally started it that I would also cover other exergaming topics as well. This is the first of many more to come.

Lately, I have been very intrigued about the entire Zumba craze that has been hitting the nation. My friend is an instructor, but she’s an hour a way and right now I don’t have a lot of disposable income to join a gym or attend a class every other week. That’s what got me thinking: Is there a Zumba WII Game? I went over to Amazon and searched for one and there it was. Don’t tell the hubby, but I’m going to dig into our TV fund over at Amazon from money I’ve earned from Swagbucks and pick it up right now.

Since I’m over there looking at it, I might as well cover what some of the other reviews are saying here. Then I don’t need to bother in the review I’ll write later.

Zumba for the WII – What looks good

1. The energy point is really motivating. The better you do and the more you keep up, the better your energy point is. Unlike working out with just a plain old Zumba DVD.
2. It’s fun and it gets you moving.

1. If you don’t have any Zumba or dance experience, it may be a little difficult to pick up with the game. It seems like those with the most complaints have never been to a Zumba class.
2. In order to move up to the Zumba Party, you have to get points. It seems like the points are based upon how much you move and not how accurate you are. This could be real disappointing if you’re ultimate goal is to be as accurate as possible.
3. The graphics aren’t great, but it’s an exercise game not an RPG, who really cares about the graphics.

So you’ve played Dance Dance Revolution at your local video arcade, and now you want to bring the excitement of the game at home with you to play on your Sony PS2. Metal dance pads are the way to go, and are an absolute must for two very simple reasons:

1.You want to be very accurate with how well your dance moves are registered on the mat.

Easy going game players may discover that the soft pack in pad is sufficient enough for regular game play. The dance mat is sensitive and accurate enough to read your every dance move. And your dance pad ought to last you an extremely long time. Whereas, if you are a hardcore gamer who dances hard and dances very often, you could find yourself wearing out the mat a lot faster. Eventually, it is highly suggested that you consider replacing your worn out mat with a PS2 metal pad instead. They are a lot more durable, will be able to take a beating better, and will, without doubt, last you much more time than the soft mat.

2. An additional concern is the ability of the pad to balance on a carpeted floor, which effects the accuracy of your dance moves.

If you play with the soft pad on a carpeted floor, your dance moves may not register properly, because the pad is unable to lay flat against a level floor, so it’s possible that as you step across the mat, you might inadvertently displace the mat, without even realizing it. Due to the game mat’s sensitivity, even a minor variance in it’s ability to remain level and flat against the floor can screw with your rhythm, and hence your game play . There may constantly be some subtle movement. But, guess what? If you use a PS2 metal pad instead, you will be able to avoid this problem altogether.

Now, unfortunately, these PS2 metal mats don’t exactly come cheap. But look at it this way: PS2 metal pads may be pricier up front, and may seem unnecessary, since the soft pad apparently does the job just fine. But believe me, you’ll be saving money in the long run, since you won’t be wearing out the metal pad every few months, the way you might with the soft pads.

As I said earlier, the plastic DDR dance mats are cheap, but you don’t want to drop your hard earned money on something you won’t use. Take your game home and try things out first. If you really like playing your dance game, then start looking into some better options. The cheap plastic mats can be hard on your feet and may slide around while you are playing which may cause you to become frustrated when you can’t pass the level you’ve been trying to beat for 3 days. If you are at this point, then upgrading your DDR mat is definitely in your future.

Before you buy a DDR dance mat, the main thing you need to know is how often you plan to use your pad. Just make a mental note about how often you plan to use your dance mat or how often you have already used the plastic mat that came with your game. If you are going to use it daily, you will definitely want to splurge and move towards the metal mats. These mats last longer and don’t move around as much.

Don’t be afraid to buy more than one DDR dance mat at a time. You never know when another family member may want to join in the fun when they see how much weight you are losing while having fun too. With an extra mat laying around, you can have competitions against others and you will always have a spare just in case you wear your first mat out.

It’s important to make sure the dance mat model you are looking at is designed for your system. There is nothing more disappointing than getting home with your new toy and then realizing that your purchase will not work with what you already own. Returning video game items is difficult sometimes, so doing the research up front is important. If you are unsure about the compatibility, be sure to read the side of the box at the store or ask a store clerk. When buying online, the retailer should state the systems for which a mat is compatible. If they don’t state it in the description, email the online retailer or move on to the next item or store. You don’t want to hassle around with returning an online purchase when the mistake could have been avoided.

Storage of your DDR dance mat is also important. Make sure it is stored at room temperature in a dry environment. This will keep the internal components from damage due to over exposure to extreme temperatures. Once you have your mat out of the box, avoid folding it back up. Folding your mat could cause the arrows to shift which would keep you from hitting the notes you have hit in the past. If you do choose to fold your mat, be aware of this next time you get it out to play and shift the arrows back into place before using it again. You will avoid a lot of frustrations and cursing at the TV (at least if you are like me).
